Rebecca
Smith weaves tapestries and designs fiber jewelry in her studio in San Diego,
CA. In creating imagery with fiber, Rebecca adheres to design principles that
are unique to her medium, often incorporating references to indigenous weaving
into her contemporary tapestry pieces. Her vivid designs express impressions
of the landscape and its cultural manifestations. She is committed to keeping
the art of tapestry weaving in the public eye. To that end, she exhibits her
work at art shows and in galleries, and offers classes and workshops to teach
others this rare, classical art form.
Artist Statement:
I grew up in the desert southwest. This is the landscape that I carry in my
heart and weave into my work. I have explored its beauty in both abstract and
pictorial forms. My hope is that my work will inspire in the viewer a sense
of calm and a feeling of connection with something that is outside of them,
but also within them.
All of my tapestries are hand woven. I use fine wools and other exotic yarns
to create each piece individually. There are no two alike. Weaving is a time-consuming
endeavor, and I sometimes weave for several months to create one of my large
designs. I have devoted my life to this art form since I learned it 20 years
ago.
